St. Johns, NL, November 23, 2017 – Fogo Island Cooperative Society, with the help of White Rock Consulting & Communications, Atlantic Trading Corporation, and Al Sharbak Trading, hosted a successful Seafood Tasting and Information Session in Doha yesterday evening. The event was held in La Zurd Hall at the Ezdan Hotel and featured representatives across Qatar’s food industry. Among the attendees were executive chefs and seafood distributors from 5 and 7 star hotels in Doha. Also in attendance was Trade Commissioner Mohammad Salhi. Ezdan Hotel Chef Reinnier prepared Canadian codfish hailing from Newfoundland & Labrador for the invited guests as part of Fogo’s Best Whitefish on the Planet! campaign. The campaign aims to network with key individuals in Qatar’s food distribution sector in order to gauge interest for Canadian seafood products in markets overseas.

Doug Power, President of Atlantic Trading Corporation called the event a success and was thrilled by the positive support Phil Barnes, General Manager of Fogo Island Co-Op, received for their initiative. “I’m really happy for Phil and the Fogo Island delegation here in Doha. I think they’ve come away with key contacts in the region who are interested in what they have to offer and a better understanding of the great potential in the State of Qatar.” The Fogo Island delegation echoed Power’s sentiments: “We are very optimistic about this potential market. Qatar is everything we thought it would be and more, full of kind and considerate people. This is the beginning of a new adventure for the Co-op.” Earlier in the week, Canadian Ambassador to the State of Qatar, Adrian Norfolk, wished the delegation success on their campaign and expressed his support for Fogo’s initiatives in Qatar.

The Fogo Island delegation has a few stops left before their return to Canada. They plan on meeting with the College of the North Atlantic-Qatar, which includes a representative from the Candian Business Development Qatar (CBDQ) branch. This meeting will help facilitate discussions with the college and find ways in which both parties can collaborate on Fogo’s export initiatives in Doha. Fogo Island went on to thank Atlantic Trading President Doug Power for his support in making this venture a reality. “Doug has gone above and beyond on the ground in Doha and has opened the door for us here in Qatar. We look forward to this new beginning and our continued work with Doug and Atlantic Trading here in Qatar. We extend our thanks to Doug, the White Rock team, and Ahmed Al Sharbak, who all helped make this vision a reality.”
